Mate Pavić is a Croatian professional tennis player who is a specialist in the doubles and mixed doubles formats. He won the 2018 Australian Open men’s doubles title with Oliver Marach. He has also won Grand Slam titles in the mixed doubles format – with Laura Siegemund at the 2016 US Open and with Gabriela Dabrowski at the 2018 Australian Open. The year 2018 was a golden dream for Mate as he also lifted the prestigious Davis Cup, as part of the Croatian Men’s National Team.
He started getting attracted to Tennis at the age of 5 when he saw his father coach his sister Nadja. Nadja has also been Mate’s coach for the longest time in his professional career, along with John Farrington.
In his junior career, Mate had a decent win-loss record of 95–51 in the singles format. His doubles record was better though (90–39) and he decided to specialize in that format in his professional career, limiting himself to only a handful of singles matches.
As a junior, he had reached a combined (singles and doubles) world ranking of No. 5 in January 2011. He also won the 2011 “Wimbledon Championships – Boys’ Doubles” title with George Morgan.

His first senior ATP doubles title came at the Nice Open in May 2015 in partnership with Michael Venus. The duo had a hot run from May 2015 to October 2016 where they reached won 5 ATP doubles titles and reached the finals of 6 other events. However, they split at the end of 2016 as they never went past the 3rd round of any Grand Slam event as a pair.
In May 2018, Mate became the youngest player since Todd Woodbridge in 1996 to achieve the World No. 1 spot in the ATP Doubles rankings. He was also the first Croatian player, male or female, to hold a doubles World No. 1 ranking in Tennis.
Mate’s first ATP Masters 1000 triumph came at the 2019 Shanghai Masters doubles event, where he was partnering Brazilian player Bruno Soares.
In 2018, he was named as “ATP Doubles Team of the Year” with his playing partner Oliver Marach. The duo had ended 2018 as the No. 1 ranked team in the World in the ATP official rankings.
In July 2023, Mate and Lyudmyla Kichenok won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon 2023 by defeating Joran Vliegen and Xu Yifan with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-7(9-11), 6-3 in their final match.
