Magdalena Andersson is a Swedish politician who was appointed the leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, the country’s oldest political party, on November 4, 2021. Exactly 20 days later, the Riksdag, the national legislature and the supreme decision-making body of Sweden, had elected her as Sweden’s prime minister. She was due to take office on November 26, 2021, but had resigned just a few hours before this due to the breakdown of her party’s coalition with the Green Party, a political party in Sweden based on green politics. This breakdown was triggered by Riksdag‘s adoption of the opposition’s budget proposal after the defeat of her coalition’s budget. After this, she had announced that she would be seeking the confidence of the Riksdag for a single-party Social Democratic government through a vote that was scheduled for November 29, 2021. On November 30, 2021, she had assumed the office of Prime Minister, thus becoming Sweden’s first female prime minister and the country’s first female head of government after Queen Ulrika Eleonora had abdicated in 1720.

Magdalena Andersson Facts
She was interested in politics from a very young age and had joined the Social Democratic Youth League (SSU, a branch of the Swedish Social Democratic Party) in 1983, during her first year of secondary school. 4 years later, she was elected president of the Uppsala section of SSU.
After completing her studies, she had gained employment in the Prime Minister’s Office as a political adviser, from 1996 to 1998. She had then served as Director of Planning from 1998 to 2004.
Between 2004 and 2006, she had worked as Secretary of State in the Ministry of Finance, before leaving the post to again become a political adviser, this time to the opposition leader, from 2007 to 2009.
She had left that role when the Government had nominated her for the role of Chief Director of the Swedish Tax Agency, a position that she had held until 2012. She had resigned from her post after her selection as a Social Democratic Party candidate ahead of the 2014 general election.
After the party’s triumph in that election, she was appointed the Minister for Finance by the new prime minister Stefan Löfven in his cabinet, in October 2014. She was reappointed the Minister for Finance by Stefan following the 2018 election.
In 2020, the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), the primary policy advisory committee of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), had selected her to serve as Chair of the Committee for a term of 3 years. She was the first European in that role after more than a decade, as well as the first woman to hold that position.
She has also served as an ex-officio member on the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB), and the World Bank.
In August 2021, Stefan Löfven had announced that he would be stepping down as the leader of the Social Democratic Party in November 2021. Magdalena was chosen as leader-designate after this and was elected the leader of the party on November 4, 2021, the party’s 2nd female leader after Mona Sahlin.
An athletic, outdoorsy person, her hobbies include hiking, kayaking, and mountaineering. She was also an elite-level swimmer in her youth.
