Since making his professional debut in 2004 in the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zed, where he placed fourth in the “B” group, Nakamura’s career has advanced significantly. He guided the American chess team to fifth place at the Chess Olympiad in August of that same year. In 2016, Nakamura defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on tiebreaks to win the Gibraltar Chess Festival for the second consecutive year. He won the Zurich Chess Challenge that year for the second time running. The Gibraltar Chess Festival victory in 2017 added to his successful year.
