  • He had developed an interest in music from a very young age and used to play the piano at home, as a toddler. He had been presented with a small drum kit as a young child and he soon began to practice with a full-size drum kit. In 7th grade, he had started to play the drums for a band called The Suburbanites.
  • When he was 15 years old, he had taught himself to play the guitar. About 3 years later, he had founded a band called Spinfire with his friend Matt Halpern. He was the band’s frontman and lead guitarist and the group would travel around and perform at festivals and shows in the Baltimore area. With the band, he had written and produced several original songs.
  • After his high school graduation, he had considered joining the renowned Berklee College of Music but had later opted to market his band with major labels instead. However, when his band members, unlike him, chose to join a college, he was forced to record a demo of his own music and send it to several record labels and music producers including Arista Records A&R vice president Josh Sarubin, who he had met during his time in Spinfire.
  • It was Josh who had later called him to invite him for an audition in New York City for the band of a new talent he had just signed, Avril Lavigne. He had joined her band in 2002 and had started contributing as a guitarist and music director from the band’s 2nd album Under My Skin.
